Thematic Explanation Essay – Final Exam Grade For the past three weeks we have been reading and discussing through the blog several 20th Century British short stories. These include “The Lagoon” by Joseph Conrad, “Araby” by James Joyce, “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence, and “The lady in the Looking Glass” by Virginia Woolf. We identified commonalities amongst the stories – the most obvious being the idea of futility. Below are some additional concepts related to the texts. Your job is to write a 3-5 paragraph essay that discusses one of the concepts below in the stories and in your own life. You must: 1. Define the concept or theme (NO DICTIONARY DEFINITIONS!) Instead define it in many ways. 2. Next, introduce the story/stories you will be relating it to. Summarize a small pieces of what you are going to use as your reference in the text. 3. Then – relate it to something in your own life. Finally – finish it off by relating it to world events. Concepts: Suffering and hardship Clash of cultures Racial supremacy Mortality (is inescapable) true love (does not overcome all) loss of innocence Check out Azar Nafisi’s essay as a model
